Miss Famine: Grow Your Groceries

Living in a hovel is dreary enough, but now that the cucumbers in the local supermarkets have mutated and started eating every fourth customer it seems wise to us Horsewomen to consider alternate sources of produce.

Foraging is an option, but be sure to go out well armed. Thankfully, well armed doesn't mean you can't be fashion forward. For those of us who live in major urban areas, or the remains of major urban areas, like myself, foraging can be a challenge. That grass that's growing on the 405 freeway just isn't that nourishing. Creating your own Kitchen Garden is a far easier solution.

Even the smallest hovel has room for it's own Kitchen Garden, so as I build my own fabulous at home produce section, I hope that all of you apocalyptic types will play along at home.

The first step is to find a sturdy, weather proof table or set of shelves. Some plants prefer shade, others sun. Multilevel planting racks will provide a variety of environments for your kitchen garden.

Once you've found an appropriately adorable setting for your new garden, it's time to compile a list of the top ten vegetables you'd love to be able to just pick right off the vine the next time you want to cook. Come back next week to see mine!
